Peter Windsor, former F1 team manager, has commented on the potentially troubling situation McLaren have got on their hands with Oscar Piastri's emergence over Lando Norris, but stresses, 'it's what they asked for'.
During his habitual post-race analysis, Windsor commented on McLaren's situation following Piastri's win at Jeddah, which saw him surpass his teammate, Norris, in the championship standings.
"So, it was Oscar Piastri, absolutely superb, who won this race. Another big step forward for him within the McLaren team," commented the Australian analyst on his youtube channel.
However, for the papaya team itself, Windsor predicts trouble times ahead. "In terms of where they're going with the championship, it's brewing up to be one of those seasons where it's going to be Piastri-Norris, Norris-Piastri."
"And I guess that's what McLaren asked for, it's what McLaren want. And it'll be interesting to see how it pans out as the season progresses. At the moment, there's no sign of any sort of game plan at all," Windsor judged.
"And from Oscar Piastri's point of view, there is no way in the world he will now be thinking of, 'oh yeah, well, Lando's the number one driver' or whatever they may want to think," strongly suggesting his own belief that McLaren consider Norris to be their #1 driver.
For Windsor there's no chance of Piastri considering helping Norris again this season. "'I'd better give him some help to get him back into the lead of the championship'. Because Oscar Piastri could very, very easily now become world champion in 2025."
