Vervanger Verstappen bij Red Bull: ‘Die dinsdag was lastig voor mijn nek’
Jake Dennis kende een topjaar: al in juli veroverde de Brit de wereldtitel in de Formule E, om later zijn eerste meters tijdens een Grand Prix-weekeinde te maken. Tijdens VT1 in Abu Dhabi reed Dennis zelfs zijn ronden in de Red Bull van Max Verstappen.
Als tijdens het jaarlijkse FIA Prize Giving Gala aan Dennis wordt gevraagd hoe hij zijn sessies in de RB19 heeft ervaren, dan verschijnt er een grote glimlach op zijn gezicht. “Ik denk dat VT1 in Mexico extreem moeilijk voor mij zal zijn, om me daar weer aan te passen aan een Formule E-auto. Dus ik denk niet dat het [de ervaring met Red Bull] mij veel zal helpen voor de Formule E”, vertelde Dennis tegen de media - waaronder GPblog. In Mexico staat begin januari de eerste ePrix van het seizoen ‘24 op de kalender.
Dennis blij met opgedane ideeën
Toch ziet Dennis er zeker de voordelen van om eens in de RB19 te hebben gereden, na jarenlang tevens de simulatorrijder van Red Bull te zijn. “Ik denk dat het over het algemeen altijd goed is om vijf jaar met een team als Red Bull te werken en in de nabijheid te zijn van een aantal van de beste ingenieurs ter wereld. Het is belangrijk om in de buurt van zeer intelligente mensen te zijn. En uiteraard hebben zij er enkele van de besten. Dus je pikt hier en daar ideeën op en neemt deze ook mee naar je team [in de Formule E] en probeert je team zoveel mogelijk vooruit te helpen.”
Toch gaat het om het racen. Dennis kreeg niet alleen de kans om VT1 in Abu Dhabi te rijden, hij mocht ook deelnemen aan de test op dinsdag na de Grand Prix. “Het besturen van de auto is een absoluut genot. Het is lang geleden dat ik in iets heb gereden met zoveel downforce. Dat heeft mij zeker verrast. Ik ging uit van het ergste, het zou een grote stap voor me zijn. Alle verwachtingen zij uitgekomen. Ik heb zó genoten. Dinsdag was een beetje lastig voor de nek, vanzelfsprekend met zo’n 125 ronden. Maar we zijn er doorheen gekomen. Wat een geweldige dag!”
