Lewis Hamilton has been voted as the best driver of the season by his fellow F1 drivers in a poll held by Formula1.com, as the Brit secured his fifth drivers' title in 2018 and his fourth in five years at Mercedes.

With 11 wins and 17 podiums during the year, this season was once again all about Hamilton, despite his struggles earlier on in the season. It really looked like Sebastian Vettel was going to challenge him for the title this time, but as the season progressed, the Brit caught up with the Ferrari driver and left him behind in his dust.

Therefore, it's no wonder the 33-year-old ended up topping the charts. Max Verstappen manning second place is slightly more surprising though, as the Dutchman started his season very poorly before turning things around. He did pull off some incredible results once he did get going after Monaco, as he won two races in Austria and Mexico and ended his season with five straight podium finishes. The Dutchman has seemingly matured after that poor start and has started to show why people have dubbed him as the next big thing in F1. Let's see if his incredible form carries over to 2019!

In third place, even more surprisingly, was Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard managed to squeeze points out of a McLaren car that often didn't have any business of being in the points, as he ended 11th in the drivers' championship with 50 points, 38 points and five places above teammate Stoffel Vandoorne. The two-time champion announced his retirement from F1 as well, though, which no doubt influenced the voting.
