McLaren CEO Zak Brown has said that he would "very much like to see" Fernando Alonso "behind the wheel of a McLaren again", showing interest in the Spaniard reunited with the British team.
The American sees the chance for Alonso, who has a history of driving for McLaren in both Formula 1 and IndyCar, to represent the team once again, with the opportunity to do so in the World Endurance Championship when they start in the endurance racing class in 2027.
Alonso, now at 43 years of age, is still taking part in the pinnacle of motorsport, but it is unclear what he'll do after his contract with Aston Martin ends in 2026. Stopping motorsport entirely after 2026 seems unlikely for the two-time F1 world champion, opening up the possibility to return to another class.
“Fernando is one of the best. I know that because he has already worked for us. He is an incredible athlete,” Brown started by saying while in attendance at the Laureus Awards ceremony.
"He is an incredible athlete, and although his days in Formula 1 are soon to be numbered, we have already announced that we are returning to Le Mans. It’s a race he has already won, and I would very much like to see him behind the wheel of a McLaren again,”
With McLaren announcing that they will join the Hypercar class of WEC from the 2027 season onwards, they have yet to announce any drivers that will come and get behind the wheel of their brand-new machine.
The experience of Alonso could certainly prove to be of great value when the British team come into the racing class. In 2018 and 2019, the Spaniard won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota.
